I'm thinking of a number. This number is 12 less than its square. What could my number be?

let nwmber to be X

the number is 12 less than it's square,

so X=12-X^2

=> X^2+X-12=0

=> (X+4)(X-3)=0

=>X= 3, or X=-4

in math we don't usually take negative numbers into account so your number would be 3
