Are viruses considered nonliving because they're are not made of protein

No. Firstly, viruses do contain protein capsids, in which DNA or RNA is contained.


To answer your question, viruses are considered non-living, because the only characteristic they exhibit, usual to the living organism, is multiplication. And that's about it. They cannot breathe, eat and so on.
