As I understood your typing 3 1/4 means [tex]3 \frac{1}{4} [/tex] So,

[tex]3 \frac{1}{4} -2 \frac{2}{4} = \frac{13}{4} - \frac{10}{4}= \frac{3}{4} [/tex]
