Answer:  decreased production of GABA.

benzodiazepine act on a specific sub-receptor of the GABA receptor.

The chronic and excessive use of benzodiazepines, creates the risk of dependence, causing alterations at the receptor site. If this drug is always present the GABA receptor function undergoes downregulation, which means less GABA receptors.
