When the survivors of the starving time were sailing down the James, to go back to England, they encountered a ship that was carrying the newly appointed governor, Thomas West. His crew was carrying a year's worth of supplies and he insisted that the survivors return under his new leadership. With a stricter form of leadership he was able to teach them to cook, practice sanitary methods, and to ration their supplies. Soon they began to prosper because of these techniques and growing tobacco.
