After the September 11, 2001 attacks, the United States together with the United Kingdom, launched Operation Enduring Freedom in a war against terrorism. Their goals were to break up the al-Qaeda and to take away their operations base by toppling the Taliban. Afghanistan had long been controlled by the Taliban and it had allowed al-Qaeda, a militant organization founded by Osama bin Laden to operate their training camps in Afghanistan.
